Discovery call questions

Discovery call questions for coaches

Not another list of 50 icebreakers. Split questions into before the call and on the call, then map each one to Fit, Readiness, or Risk — so answers feed a pre-call brief, not a cold conversation.

Direct answer

Ask most hard questions before the call

Budget, timeline, niche fit, and done-for-you expectations should not be a surprise ten minutes into a discovery call. Put those on a pre-call questionnaire. Use the live call to test coachability, clarify the real bottleneck, and decide together — informed by a lead qualification scorecard, not a blank slate.

Before the call

Pre-call questions (scored)

These belong on the form or screener. Score them against Fit / Readiness / Risk before you open the calendar.

Fit

  1. What result are you chasing in the next 90 days?
  2. What is standing in the way right now?
  3. What have you already tried?
  4. What would success look like six months from now?

Readiness

  1. What is your budget band for solving this?
  2. When do you want to start?
  3. Who else is involved in the decision?

Risk

  1. Are you looking for coaching, done-for-you delivery, or both?
  2. Anything else I should know before we talk? (open-ended)

On the call

Live discovery questions (unscored depth)

Use these after you already have a tier. You are not re-collecting basics — you are stress-testing the scorecard.

Fit

  1. Walk me through a recent week where this problem showed up.
  2. If we solved only one bottleneck, which one would unlock the rest?

Readiness

  1. What happens if nothing changes for six months?
  2. What would make this a yes this month — and what would make it a no?

Risk

  1. What have you tried that failed — and what did you learn about yourself?
  2. If we work together, what are you willing to stop doing?

Open (30 seconds)

Thanks for completing the pre-call questions. I already have a clear read on your situation — I want to use this call to test one assumption and see if we are a mutual fit.

Bridge from the scorecard

You said your 90-day goal is X and the blocker is Y. On a scale of 1–10, how painful is Y in the last 30 days — and what have you already spent trying to fix it?

Close the decision

Based on this conversation, I either recommend we start with [offer], we wait until [condition], or I point you to a better resource. Which of those feels honest from your side?

How scoring works

Questions without rules still waste calls

A question list is incomplete without decision rules. High Fit + delayed start is a B, not an A. High Fit + done-for-you expectation is capped at C or D. Put the rules on a lead qualification scorecard for coaches, then use a discovery call qualification checklist as the final gate before booking.
